Spring in the South
April 13 - 19, 2008
Sunday April 13, 2008
As we begin our tour to the South, we will enjoy coffee + doughnuts and take breaks. Arriving at Callaway Gardens, we will check-in at the Mountain Creek Inn. Dinner tonight is in Callaway’s Plant Room. (D)
Monday April 14
Breakfast is in Callaway’s Plant Room. This morning we will tour Callaway Gardens, including Birds of Prey, Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center and more. Lunch will be the delicious buffet at The Bulloch House. This afternoon we’ll tour The Little White House. Here President Franklin Delano Roosevelt sought relief from his polio. While posing for a portrait in 1945, Roosevelt died here and the still-unfinished portrait is part of the museum’s collection. Later this afternoon we can spend some time in the quaint setting of downtown Warm Springs, Georgia. The buffet in the Plant Room finishes the day. (B, L, D)
Tuesday April 15
We’ll enjoy breakfast in the Plant Room and continue our journey to Savannah. This afternoon we will arrive at and check-in for a three-night stay at the Holiday Inn Express-Savannah North. (This is not a downtown hotel but transportation will be provided to all of the attractions we will be seeing.) Dinner tonight is at the River House Seafood and Bakery. After dinner we will enjoy an evening trolley tour, hearing the history of Savannah. (B, D)
Wednesday April 16
Breakfast is included in the hotel each morning at the Holiday Inn Express. This morning we will take a “Historic Savannah Walking Tour”. This two-hour tour will cover several downtown blocks and will show us the charm of this southern city, one of America’s “most walkable cities”. As our tour ends, we will board the Savannah River Boat for a luncheon cruise. After some free time on Bay Street we will head to Old Fort Jackson. Here we will hear the story of the Fort, see the firing of the cannon, and enjoy dinner (“mess”) in a unique setting. (B, L, D)
Thursday April 17
After breakfast we will visit the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, which tells the story of this unit from its beginning in 1942 to the present. Lunch today will be a highlight! We can enjoy Paula Deen’s good home cookin’ as we take part in the Buffet at The Lady + Sons Restaurant. You can have some free time to enjoy the city, on our last day here, or just relax this afternoon. This evening we’ll tap our toes to “Return to the 50’s”, a musical variety show at the historic Savannah Theatre. (B, L)
Friday April 18
This morning we’ll enjoy breakfast and board our motorcoach and begin the trip north. We’ll stop in Chattanooga and check into our hotel in a very historic setting – the Holiday Inn – Chattanooga Choo Choo. You can enjoy the atmosphere of the building or take a walk outside in this renovated downtown area. Our final dinner of the tour will be pretty special. Tonight we’ll enjoy great food and entertainment as we take the The Prime Rib/Shrimp Creole Dinner aboard the Southern Belle Riverboat. (B, D)
Saturday April 19
Today we will have an American Breakfast Buffet in the hotel. We will head over to the Tennessee Aquarium where we have included admission to the River Journey (fresh water fish) exhibits and Ocean Journey (salt water) exhibits. After lunch (on your own) downtown, we will finish our trip, arriving home full of entertaining stories, pleasant memories and new friends. (B)
