Saturday April 12, 2008
As we begin our tour to the Atlantic, we will enjoy coffee + doughnuts and take breaks. Arriving in Lewisburg, West Virginia we will check-in at the Hampton Inn. Dinner tonight is at Food and Friends. (D)
Sunday April 13
Breakfast is included in the Hampton Inn. This morning we will continue our journey, and later in the day we will check-in for a two-night stay at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Dinner tonight is in Peppercorns Restaurant, in the hotel. After dinner you can relax and walk along the beach at the hotel. (B, D)
Monday April 14
We’ll enjoy breakfast in Peppercorns Restaurant before starting a busy day of touring. We will start at Wright Brothers National Memorial. Here on this windswept sand in 1903, man first flew. This memorial tells the story of their accomplishment. We’ll visit Elizabethan Garden, a recreated 16th Century formal English Garden that stands as a memorial to the first English colonists in the New World. We will tour Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, which tells the story of the first attempt to establish a permanent colony in America. Lunch is included this afternoon at Full Moon Café in Manteo and we will spend some time at the North Carolina Aquarium. At Jockey’s Ridge State Park we will see two of the highest sand dunes on the East Coast. After a busy day, dinner at The Dunes Restaurant is a Nags Head tradition! (B, L, D)
Tuesday April 15
Breakfast is included at Peppercorns Restaurant in the hotel before we leave. Today we will be enjoying the beauty of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. We will see Bodie Island Lighthouse and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Enjoying a Box Lunch, we will ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island. Here we will see Ocracoke Lighthouse. We’ll enjoy a long, relaxing ferry ride to Cedar Island and then enjoy dinner at Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant. This evening we will check-in for a two-night stay at Atlantic Beach AmeriSuites in Pine Knoll Shores. (B, L, D)
Wednesday April 16
After breakfast we will enjoy a Catamaran Dolphin Watching Cruise. In Beaufort we will learn the history of this town, first known as “Fish Town”, and visit the Old Burying Ground. Lunch is in the unique setting of Clawson’s 1905 Restaurant + Pub. Our riding tour will take us to the North Carolina Maritime Museum and the Watercraft Center, where we will be able to watch the construction and restoration of wooden boats. Tonight a “Pig Picking Dinner” is included. (B, L, D)
Thursday April 17
This morning we’ll enjoy breakfast and board our motorcoach and leave the ocean behind. We’ll stop in Historic New Bern, North Carolina and tour Tryon Palace, the first capitol of the Colony of North Carolina. Destroyed by fire, the original building has been rebuilt, using the original architectural drawings. The gardens surrounding the Palace offer a peaceful setting to visitors. Lunch is included at Captain Ratty’s Restaurant. Our riding tour of the city will take us to the “Birthplace of Pepsi”, where Caleb Bradham invented the recipe in 1898 in his pharmacy. Tonight we will enjoy a down-home dinner at Beverly Restaurant in Staunton. Overnight lodging this evening is in the Comfort Inn at Staunton. (B, L, D)
Friday April 18
We start the day with a Continental Breakfast in the hotel. We will tour the Staunton area and visit the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace + Museum. At Sunspots Studios + Glassblowing you will be able to buy gifts and souvenirs for everyone on your list and see glassblowing demonstrations. Enjoying the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley, we will travel to Steeles Tavern, Virginia to tour the McCormick Farm. Here in the early 1830’s Cyrus McCormick developed the “Virginia Reaper” which mechanized wheat harvesting and changed farming forever. Checking-in at the Natural Bridge Hotel, we will enjoy dinner in the Colonial Dining Room. After dinner we will go to the Natural Bridge where we will witness the sound and light show entitled “Drama of Creation”. (B, D)
Saturday April 19
Breakfast in the Colonial Dining Room starts our last day. Today we will travel home, relaxing with new friends and remembering all of the beautiful places we have visited over this past week! (B)
