Grand Hotel and the Waters of Michigan

Saturday September 18, 2010
This morning we board our motorcoach and meet new friends as we enjoy coffee + doughnuts.  Stopping for breaks and lunch, we travel to Michigan! Arriving in Grand Rapids, we check in at the Holiday Inn Express and freshen up.   This evening we board the Grand Lady Paddlewheel boat for a dinner cruise on the Grand River. (D)

Sunday September 19
A nice continental breakfast is available in the hotel. Our first stop this morning is the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. We’ll check-in at the Doubletree Hotel Bay City-Riverfront.  We enjoy dinner tonight as we sail aboard the Appledore Tall Ship to Saginaw Bay. (B, D)

Monday September 20
The day starts with the Doubletree Hotel’s Breakfast Buffet.  We meet our Bay County Historical Society guide who will take us on a “Center Avenue Tour”.  Traveling to downtown East Tawas, we’ll have some free time for lunch before checking-in at Tawas Bay Beach Resort. This afternoon we board the Shirley Ann for a Charity Island Dinner Cruise. On Charity Island we will have dinner on the porch of the light house.  After visiting with our hosts and taking in the view, we’ll board the Shirley Ann for the trip back to the mainland, enjoying dessert along the way.  (B, D)

Tuesday September 21
After our full hot Breakfast Buffet in the hotel, we will leave the Resort. We will stop soon to see the Tawas Point Lighthouse.  Traveling on, we stop at Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. We’ll arrive at John A. Lau’s Saloon in Alpena, where lunch is included. This afternoon we will tour the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.  Here we will learn about the maritime history of the Great Lakes and about some of the 200 shipwrecks that are protected in this sanctuary. Later this afternoon we arrive at Thunder Bay Resort.  This evening our group will travel by horse-drawn wagons through the woods, seeing elk along the way. Tonight’s dinner in the Elk Antler Log Cabin is being prepared before your eyes on antique wood cook stoves.   Stories, fun and food complete our day!  (B, L, D)

Wednesday September 22
Breakfast is in the Clubhouse Grill before we depart from Thunder Bay Resort. Arriving in Mackinac City there is time for lunch on your own. We will ferry to Mackinac Island, where we are taken by horse-drawn taxi to the World’s Largest Summer Hotel – Grand Hotel.  We’ll take some time to get acquainted with Grand Hotel and the hotel staff will be happy to answer any questions.  Dinner tonight is in the elegant dining room at Grand Hotel.  (B, D)

Thursday September 23 Breakfast is in the Grand Hotel dining Room. Today is yours to enjoy as you wish.  You may want to visit the shops of downtown Mackinac Island or rent a carriage or bike to explore the Island.  You might enjoy sitting on the porch, enjoying the view from Grand Hotel.    While you are on Mackinac Island, be sure to enjoy plenty of the famous fudge!  This evening’s dinner is in the Hotel’s dining room.  After dinner you can enjoy some of the entertainment that will be found in Grand Hotel.   (B, D)

Friday September 24
After breakfast our visit to Grand Hotel comes to an end.  We will take the ferry to St. Ignace, cross the Mackinac Bridge, and begin our trip home. Arriving in Holland, we will check-in at the Country Inn.  After dinner at Alpen Rose Restaurant, we’ll drive out to Holland State Park, where we might see a beautiful sunset over Lake Michigan by Big Red Lighthouse.  (B, D)

Saturday September 25
Breakfast is included in the Country Inn before we bid goodbye to Michigan. We can share stories and memories of our vacation as we return home.  (B)
